Business Expansion

Keep your calendars open for Team Boston's Finance and Business Expansion Planet on November 18th and Part II of Business Expansion on December 9th. What is Business Expansion? Satisfying consumer convenience by offering new retail concepts. For example, ATMs, mailing services or fast food.

Business Expansion tip of the month - Beginning in 1995, the Journal of Petroleum Marketing conducted three annual surveys of wholesalers who had co-branded with restaurants. JPM's September 1992 issue reported

survey findings including; (1) average monthly sales of $22,176 for branded fast food units; (2) a 28% average increase in c-store sales after adding a food branding; (3) a 91% sales increase in existing foodservice operations after a branded fast-food program was added (ten percent reported dealers).

According to Oil Express

Sun says it has seen a boost in c-store sales since installing ATMs in Philadelphia Aplus outlets. In the first month after ATMs were added, the stores averaged nearly 2,000 transactions each, while suburban sites averaged 900 transactions in June.

"Both are double the projected first month results," says Sun project manager Walt Ward. Industry data show 80% of all ATM users make a store purchase, he says.

Sun has now installed ATMs in nearly 500 stores in its Northeast and Mid-America markets. The machines are a turnkey operation, with cash-filling and other support provided by McClane FSP and EPS, the MAC ATM system.

Fast-food is the future for C-store marketers - at least, according to BP. Company officials predict that fast-food sales will jump from their current No.4 slot to No.1 in coming years, and says marketers had better be prepared to cash in on the trend.

Food service is the fastest growing C-store category, followed by water and packaged beverages, especially isotonic drinks, BP exec Sherman Scott told jobbers at a recent meeting. By comparison, tobacco sales will drop and beer sales will be flat, he said.

Key to future profits is offering not just one meal, but all three, Scott said. For example, BP predicts breakfast will comprise 37% of sales, lunch will account for 48% of volume, and dinner, 14%, at the new 4,280 sq. ft. C-store it plans to launch in Atlanta (OE 9/28).
