Montgomery noted that its not really a question of the retailer competing against the high-volume competitor, but rather, with fellow retailers for the convenience marketplace. "The difference is that if you do whats necessary to boost revenue and decrease overhead, they will go out of business and you will gain business," he said. "Gasoline is a zero-sum game, with no pent-up demand. Retailers dont tempt their customers to buy. Somebody will end up with the volume and this is an opportunity for the retailers to prepare themselves for the future. The traditional retailers face the same choices we had as kids in the schoolyard. They can flee, join or fight. Many have chosen to flee, or exit the market in recent years as the pressure from a variety of sources has mounted. Others have joined, like ARCO with Albertsons, through joint ventures, lease agreements and agreements to provide fuel. For those who fight, the objective is to raise revenues and cut costs. They have to understand that they have to lessen their dependency on gasoline gross margin." |
